Walmart

I was sick over the weekend, I am not sure if it was a stomach bug or a new medicine I am taking. I tried to go grocery shopping but I really needed to stop at Wal-Mart to buy a heater for my desk at work. I have been freezing to death.  While I was at Wal-Mart I decided to look through their grocery section.  The longer I was in the store the worse I felt. So I decided to go ahead and get what I had to have there.  Needless to say I didn't get much. I really for the life of me can not figure out why people think it is the cheapest place to do your grocery shopping.  I have know for a long time that it is not. But since I wasn't feeling too well, I did it. And have been regretting it ever since.

There was not one thing in that store that I buy on a regular basis that was cheaper at Wal-Mart than at Kroger when it's on sale.  For instance Kroger had chuck roast on sale for $2.99/lb. Wal-Mart's was $5.98/lb. That is a huge difference. Most things I normally buy were about $1.00 more than Kroger's. I realize that what I buy at Kroger is usually on sale and their prices can be quite high. But Wal-Mart does not do loss leaders like most grocery stores.

There are certain things that can be cheaper at Wal-Mart or that you can find at Wal-Mart when you can't find it anywhere else and I believe that we need Wal-Mart. It has brought a lot of jobs and purchasing options to small towns all across this country. But I for one will not be doing my weekly grocery shopping there.

Have a great day!

2/17/14

We had a fairly quiet weekend with more snow on Friday and then more on Saturday night.  Today it is raining. Hopefully, a lot of this snow will melt.

The 7Up Lemon Bundt Cake didn't turn out as well as I had hoped.

As you can tell, it stuck to the pan. Really stuck to the pan. It taste alright but it sure is ugly. Greg doesn't like it at all, so I can see that half of it will go to the chickens. I really like the glaze because it is very lemony but the cake itself, not so much.  I guess I will chalk it up to the recipes not to make again.

The 52 week money challenge is still going well. This past weekend I added $53.00 to the jar.

My new recipe to try this week is:
RANCH HOUSE CROCK POT PORK CHOPS w/ PARMESAN MASHED POTATOES  (link)

I may just make regular mashed potatoes but the pork chops sound really good and easy.

Have a great day!

Happy Valentine's Day

You would have blessed to know my dad. He was a wonderful man, had a great sense of humor, was a Southern Baptist preacher, only had a 4th grade education, and loved one woman.

He was riding on the back of a wagon when he saw my mother walking down the street and said to the guy next to him "That's the woman I am going to marry."  The guy laughed at him and told him he didn't even know that woman. Their marriage lasted over 50 years, through some might poor times and 7 children.

Mama & Daddy's 50th Anniversary Announcement

While I have lots of memories of my parents this is one just for Valentine's Day.

Roses are Red
By: J.W. Morris

Roses are red.
Violets are blue.
God made me "purty".
What happened to you?

Remember, I said he had a wonderful sense of humor. I wonder if he ever knew that those silly things he said would stick with us kids for so long. That was close to 40 years ago when he said that and I can't hear some one say "Roses are Red" without thinking of him and smiling.

All of us girls used to say that our mama taught us that if we didn't love ourselves no one else would love us, either.  I think that daddy must have had a hand in teaching us that, too.

Happy Valentine's Day!

2/7/14

Tuesday night we had an ice storm come through. We already had about 5 inches of snow on the ground, now there is about half an inch of ice on top of that.  It is beautiful especially since the sun is shinning today.

These are pictures of my forsythia bush and my clothes line.  They have looked like this for 2 days.  I am hoping that some of the ice melts today from all of the sunshine.

The weekly savings challenge is going very well. Even though I have only been doing it for 5 weeks I have knocked out the first 22 weeks and part of week 23. I realize that is the easiest part. But I am way ahead of the game and if I can just keep adding they way I have been I will hopefully be able to knock out the 52 weeks with no problem.

My new recipe for this weekend is 7Up Lemon Bundt Cake (link). It looks really yummy.

A few of the blessings from the last couple of weeks: We have managed to stay warm, no frozen, pipes, new cell phones, lunch with good friends, there are only 6 more weeks of winter (according to the ground hog).

Have a great day!
